Children and Youth Ministries

Nursery:  Ages 0-3

Our nursery provider is our only paid youth program employee.  Patricia is on staff to make sure that our youngest members are cared for in the best way.  She has a degree in Early Childhood Education and is CPR certified.  If we ever need to have more hands in the nursery, we have wonderful volunteers from the congregation that help Patricia out from time to time.

Worship Center:  Ages 4 - 1st grade

The curriculum for this age group is called “Godly Play” (https://www.godlyplayfoundation.org/).  The Godly Play approach teaches Classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s authentic experience of God.  Worship Center meets during the 10:00 a.m. service in the chapel.  Most children are 4 when they begin worship center, however we have had some very attentive and verbal 3 yr olds who are able to listen to and engage in an interactive story.  After the lesson, children are led back into the sanctuary to rejoin their families and the congregation for Communion.

Sunday School:  2nd - 5th grade

The curriculum for this age group is from the Episcopal Digital Network and is called “Lesson Plans that Work” (http://episcopaldigitalnetwork.com/lessons/).  The lessons for the day correspond to the Gospel Lesson of the day and can be found on the website on the liturgical calendar (http://episcopaldigitalnetwork.com/lessons/liturgical-calendar/).  All of these lessons have some sort of interactive activity to engage the children as well as the reading and scripture.  Sunday school meets during the 10:00 a.m. service in the Sunday school room on the second floor.  After the lesson, children are led back into the sanctuary to rejoin their families and the congregation for Communion.

Middle School and High School Youth Groups

Both groups meet twice a month.  The meetings are held from 1:00-3:30 p.m. on Sunday and include snacks (we will accommodate any special dietary needs).  We focus on having one service project (Manna, Habitat for Humanity, etc) per month and one meeting with a lesson and/or fun event (canoeing, camping, laser tag/bowling, etc) per month.  We also take part in a winter retreat to Cedar Campus (https://cedar.intervarsity.org/winter-youth-retreat) in February every year.

Training Leaders for Christ

Training Leaders for Christ ("TLC" for short) is a 9-day intensive, immersive experience in leadership training for high school youth. Participants engage in daily prayer, study in spirituality and leadership, engage in hands-on service in the community, and enjoy some Northern Michigan recreation. Service partners include Little Traverse Conservancy and Manna Food Bank. See the website at: www.trainingleadersforchrist.org

Episcopal Church Camp through the Diocese of Western Michigan

A week of Church Camp leads to as much Spiritual Growth as a year of Sunday School. It makes lifelong memories and enduring friendships.  More information is available on the website of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan: www.edwm.org.
