The Emmanuel Interim Rector

The Rev. Canon Anne C. Hallmark

Ordained in 1987, Anne brings more than 30 years of diverse experience to her role as advisor, counselor, coach and  trainer for congregations and clergy. As a certified Interim Minister, she successfully helped 10 congregations find new pastors, as well as having served as a full-time rector herself for 9-years.  Anne has also provided spiritual direction, worked as a regional dean in the Diocese of Virginia and as a counselor for the DuPage Illinois Alcohol Treatment Center and as a certified mentor with the Education for Ministry (EfM) program. Prior to seminary Anne worked as an Economic Development officer with the US Department of Commerce and other federal agencies.

On June 1, 2018 The Rev. Anne C. Hallmark became Canon Missioner for the northern region of the Diocese.  Under the direction of Bishop Hoagland, Anne’s role has been to strengthen our region’s congregations, their relationships with each other and with the diocese as well as with the communities in which we live and work—all in service to our Presiding Bishop’s vision for ‘the Jesus Movement’ in Michigan, the nation and the world.  It is in this capacity, that Rev. Canon Anne is joining us in covering some Sundays until our new rector arrives.

The Rev. Dr. J. Barrington

A seasoned interim minister, the Rev. Dr. J. Barrington joins us in a professional capacity, covering Sundays until our new rector arrives. Born in Philadelphia and brought up in the Methodist church, he was confirmed in the Episcopal Church when he was an undergraduate in Boston. Ordained at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1998 and 1999, Father Barrie has served Anglican and Lutheran congregations in California, New York, and New Jersey, after a career in information technology. In addition to his very part-time responsibilities here, he serves as editor of church reviews for the journal Anglican and Episcopal History, and as a member of the General Board of Examining Chaplains—the folks who write, administer, and evaluate the annual General Ordination Examination for the Episcopal Church. He is the author of sixteen articles in scholarly journals, as well as numerous book and church reviews, blog postings, and minor publications. Recently retired, he now lives on Lake Shore Drive with his spouse, James MacKenzie.
